When Sports Geek approached us about working with them on their website it seemed like a perfect match for us. Sports Geek is a fantasy sports website combined with an online poker website. Users can pick teams on a weekly basis and go up against a pool of other users, much like an online poker tournament. This was a great match for us because Brian was very experienced with many of the online poker websites and Mike play pretty much every fantasy sport out there. We had a very good working knowledge of what Sports Geek wanted to accomplish before we even began the project.

This was a very complex site, both from a design perspective and a development perspective. We had to manage A LOT of data and present that to users in a manageable fashion. From the design side, we had to revise the player management screens multiple times to keep everything clear. We opted for a lot of rollover actions to let users know what they could and could not do on the site. We chose to use drag and drop, tooltips and notification windows to make sure the user was always informed to their status.

The development of this site proved to be quite challenging as well. We received stats updates every 30 seconds while football games were being played and were serving that to users at the same interval using AJAX. User could see their teams stats, player stats and team ranking in near real time. Aside from the standard complications with pulling live data, we also had to account for the fact that it was a large amount of data. We optimized our procedures and cached as much data as we could so that non-compliant browsers could handle the large amount of javascript. It was a challenge to bring this much data together in real time and provide a more exciting experience for users.

With users actually entering challenges with real-money, security was of utmost importance. We worked hard to ensure that all user data was as secure as possible and any financial data was encrypted and stored off-site. This was the highest level of security we had worked with to date and was a good exercise for us in ensuring our standard procedures provided an adequate level of protection.

This website proved to be a challenge for us in many different areas, but through hard work, past experience and using new technologies we were able to create a enjoyable user experience for all of the players. Although Sports Geek is only offering football challenges currently, they are working to expand into a number of other fantasy sports and we look forward to developing those modules for them.
